The Girl Who Finally Spoke

Chapter 5 - Two Mothers

DNA confirmed the truth.

Elena was Lily's biological mother.

Alexander was not her biological father.

The biological father had died before Lily was born, something Catherine had also hidden.

Legally, everything became complicated.

Emotionally, it was worse.

Elena could have fought for immediate custody.

She did not.

Alexander expected her to.

Instead, she told him:

"You're her father."

He looked at her.

"Biologically—"

"I don't care about biology."

She looked toward Lily playing quietly nearby.

"You stayed up when she had fevers. You taught her to ride a bicycle. She runs to you when she's afraid."

Elena swallowed.

"I gave birth to her. You raised her."

Alexander's eyes filled.

"So what happens now?"

"We stop letting adults decide her life without asking what she needs."

For the first time in six years, someone made that choice.

Margaret moved out of the mansion.

She later cooperated with investigators regarding the falsified medical records and accepted responsibility for her role.

The doctor who falsified Elena's records lost his license and faced criminal charges.

Alexander did not forgive his mother quickly.

Elena did not forgive her at all.

Not yet.

Lily began therapy.

Some days she spoke.

Some days she didn't.

Nobody forced her.

Elena remained in the house, but not as a servant.

Alexander offered her money.

She refused.

Instead, she found an apartment nearby and began training as a child counselor, something she had once planned to do before losing her baby changed her life.

Lily spent time with both of them.

One afternoon, months later, Alexander walked into the living room.

Lily was sitting at the table eating strawberries.

Elena sat beside her.

The teddy bear was between them.

Lily looked up.

"Daddy."

Alexander smiled.

Then Lily turned.

"Mom?"

Elena froze.

The strawberry slipped from her fingers.

Lily frowned.

"Why are you crying?"

Elena covered her mouth.

Alexander looked away, giving her the moment.

Lily climbed into Elena's lap.

"I can call you something else."

Elena shook her head quickly.

"No."

She wrapped both arms around the child.

"You can call me anything you want."

Lily thought about it.

Then leaned against her chest.

"Mom is okay."

That evening, Alexander stood in the doorway watching them.

Months earlier, he had been shocked because Lily accepted one spoonful of food from a stranger.

Now he understood why.

Elena had not performed a miracle.

Somewhere inside a frightened six-year-old, Lily had remembered her.

A voice heard before birth.

A scent.

A touch.

Perhaps nothing that could ever be proven.

But when Lily believed everyone she loved eventually disappeared, Elena had made one simple promise.

"I'm not going anywhere."

And for once, an adult kept it.
