The Girl Who Finally Spoke

Chapter 1 - The First Words
For six days, Lily had not spoken.
She had barely eaten.
She spent most of her time sitting on the marble floor of the Whitmore mansion, holding the old teddy bear her mother had given her before she died.
Her father, Alexander Whitmore, had tried everything.
Whenever anyone approached her, Lily lowered her head and pulled the teddy bear closer.
That afternoon, Alexander stood in the doorway watching Elena kneel beside his daughter.
Elena had only worked in the mansion for three weeks. Officially, she had been hired to help manage the household after Alexander's wife, Catherine, died unexpectedly.
She held a small bowl.
"Just a small bite, sweetheart."
Lily did not respond.
Elena waited.
She never pushed the spoon closer.
Never told Lily to stop crying.
Never promised everything would be fine.
After almost a minute, Lily slowly raised her eyes.
Her lips moved.
"Are you staying?"
Alexander froze.
Behind him, his mother Margaret covered her mouth.
Lily had spoken.
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"I'm not going anywhere."
Lily stared at her for another moment.
Then something even more impossible happened.
She opened her mouth and accepted the spoon.
Alexander took an involuntary step forward.
"How is that possible?"
Margaret whispered from behind him.
"She's eating."
Alexander looked at Elena differently now.
But Elena was not celebrating.
She was staring at Lily's teddy bear.
More specifically, at the small blue ribbon tied around its neck.
Her face had gone pale.
Because she had tied that ribbon herself six years earlier.
Before Lily was born.
