A young mother is humiliated in the kitchen
CHAPTER 4 - What Elena Knew
Ruth sat with us in the study while rain tapped against the tall windows.
She was calm in the way only older women can be when they have carried guilt for years.
"Your son was born early," she said. "He had trouble breathing. There were complications. Elena arrived before you woke up."
I stared at her. "Why was she there?"
Ruth looked at Derek. Then at me.
"Because the baby in your room was not the only baby born that night."
The words took a moment to reach me.
Ruth explained that another woman had delivered a child in the same wing. The mother was frightened, alone, and had left before dawn. Her baby had been placed in temporary care while records were corrected. Elena had learned the truth and panicked. She believed any public connection between the two infants would destroy her family and ruin the man she had once loved.
"So she changed the forms," Derek said quietly.
Ruth nodded. "And she used her power to make sure no one asked questions."
I felt sick.
Not because my son had been stolen.
Because Elena had looked me in the eye and used my fear against me while she knew there was another child tied to this secret.
"Where is the other baby now?" I asked.
Ruth lowered her gaze. "He is not a baby anymore. His name is Noah. He has been raised by the woman who left that night."
Derek stood up so fast his chair scraped the floor.
"Why are you telling us this now?"
Ruth reached into her coat and placed one last paper on the desk.
A recent photograph.
It showed a boy of ten standing outside a clinic.
He had my son's eyes.
And on the back, in Ruth's handwriting, were five words that changed everything:
He has been asking for her.
