A young mother is humiliated in the kitchen

CHAPTER 2 - Paper Trails

Derek did not let go of my hand for the rest of the night.

He led me upstairs, away from the music, away from the staring faces, away from the kitchen that had suddenly felt like a cage. In his study, he sat me down on the sofa and brought me water I could not drink.

"Tell me everything," he said.

So I did.

I told him about Elena taking my son from my arms earlier in the evening, smiling as if she were being kind. I told him how she had guided me into the kitchen and handed me gloves. I told him how she said a woman like me should know her place if she wanted to be accepted here.

Derek listened with his jaw clenched.

"My mother had no right," he said.

Mother.

He had never called Elena that in front of me before. Not like this.

I looked down at my hands. "She said I was nothing but a mistake you made."

His expression hardened. "You are not a mistake."

He said it so quickly that I almost believed him.

But by midnight, the house had gone quiet, and the questions arrived.

Why had Elena acted as if she had the right to speak for me? Why had she been holding my son's birth records earlier that afternoon? And why had she looked scared when she saw Derek with me?

In the guest room, I found my purse tipped open on the dresser. My wallet was untouched. My cash was still there. But tucked inside the lining was a folded hospital receipt I had never seen before.

Along with a note in the same neat script:

He never saw the original. Ask about the switch.

I read it three times.

Then I noticed the receipt had my son's name on it.

And another name underneath it.

Not mine.
